34. ROMAN STONE CAMP FROM CIOROIU NOU
Proof of Roman rule, the camp is dated in the 2nd century AD. Nearby, a rustic villa was also identified. The locality is situated 20 km north of the Danube. The fortification is located southeast of the present Cioroiu Nou village , to the edge of the cemetery, and its dimensions were set to be 235x130 m.
The importance of the camp derives from the fact that a detachment of Legion VII Claudia was cantoned in this camp.
Several monuments - a temple, terme, a building with ahypocaust , dated to the 3rd century AD, have been researched here. From the text of an inscription, it appears that a military watch and guard point operated here in the third century. Partially destroyed by the Carps in 245, the fortification was rebuilt with trench and wall of defense
